Non-corrosive to skin, unlike muriatic acid. The Safe-HCL Seashell Cleaning Kit has what you need to clean seashells and other small items up to 9.5 inches, including the safety gear you are required to wear. Safe-HCL is still an acid and may irritate skin, so wear the included gloves and glasses every time.

In the kit:

• 1 quart (32 fl oz) Safe-HCL modified acid
• 1 gallon opaque HDPE jug with lid, for mixing and for storing used acid
• 1 pair heavy-duty chemical-resistant nitrile gloves (required gear)
• 1 pair safety glasses (required gear)
• Chemical-resistant tongs
• Stainless steel pick set
• Scrub brush

How to clean shells:

• Put on the gloves and glasses, and wear protective clothing. Work outdoors or in a well-ventilated area, and cover your bench with a towel or disposable pad.
• Always add acid to water. Use full strength for a quick 3-5 second dip, or 1 part Safe-HCL to 1-2 parts water for a slower soak.
• Dip shells with the tongs, check the result and re-dip as needed.
• Neutralize in a second container of water and baking soda, then rinse. Use the picks and brush to clear loosened deposits.
• Store used solution in the labeled HDPE jug, separate from fresh product. Keep out of reach of children.

At full strength, Safe-HCL dissolves calcium carbonate about as well as 15% hydrochloric acid (manufacturer lab data). It is low-fuming compared with straight muriatic acid, but vapors are still harmful if inhaled. It is readily biodegradable (OECD 301E), per manufacturer data.
